The world production of nuts is more than 4.2 million tons per year. Almost 50% of the nuts produced in the world are walnuts. The main producers of walnut are the USA, China and Turkey. The top-5 countries also include Ukraine and Iran.
The second place in terms of production volumes is almonds, which are grown mainly in the USA (80% of the world crop).
Turkey is a key producer of hazelnuts – up to 70% of all nuts in the world are produced there. Italy and Georgia occupy the second and third places correspondently.
The main suppliers of pistachios are the USA and Iran.

For the last 10 years, there has been a steady upward trend in the production of nuts. Only during the last few years, the production of hazelnuts has increased 1,3 times, almonds – 2,7 times, walnuts – 2,6 times, pistachios – tripled. Experts attribute this growth to the global trend towards a healthy lifestyle – and healthy food, as the main use of nuts is in the food industry, though not the only one. There are also medicine and cosmetology.
Most producers, as a rule, recycle the nutshell by means of its combustion., while it is almost 50% of the whole nut!

Not so long time ago, there was a trend towards its use as a substitute for wood in the furniture industry, a filler for paints, as a fertilizer in gardening or as a bio-fuel.
At the same time, it is persistently overlooked that the walnut shell is an excellent raw material for carbonization and has even better qualities for this than wood.
Walnut shell is characterized by a low content of sulfur, nitrogen and ash, the carbon content is 1.5 wt.% higher than in birch wood and the percentage of lignin in it is also higher (48.28%).
Charcoal obtained from the shell are distinguished by the absence of harmful impurities, high mechanical strength and very fine pores. It can be used for the production of activated carbon, barbecue charcoal or hookah charcoal.
BIO-KILN is an environmentally friendly equipment that allows to carbonize small-fraction raw materials (5-50 mm), such as olive pits, nutshells and seeds of fruit trees, as well as shredded branches, by the method of low-temperature pyrolysis. The charcoal obtained on BIO-KILN is characterized by a high content of non-volatile carbon.
